Introduction to 11 Mistakes to avoid when starting a Blog
11 Mistakes to avoid when starting a Blog. The following mistakes to avoid, are just a few. Try not to make them. You will make plenty of others of your own. Its part of the learning curve.
Let’s get started, shall we?
1)Not choosing a profitable niche
Choosing a profitable niche is one of the most important things you can do for your blog. You can do everything right, but if you pick the wrong niche, nothing can save your blog. So do your research and choose a niche that you can monetize.
Find your audience.
What is their biggest problem? How do you plan on helping them?
Find their problem and provide a solution. It will always have a monetization strategy. That way it also narrows down your niche. Helping a very specific type of people.
When using this method of choosing a niche, you won’t get stuck on how to pick what to write about.
Most people struggle with it because they make it more complicated than it has to be. It doesn’t.
Find a problem and solve it. Give your audience what they want. But make sure that you at least like to write about the topic. You are going to create content about it for years.
I have a post about choosing the perfect niche.
2) Getting a free host and not buying a Domain name
Don’t make the mistake of going for a free hosting platform. It can not be monetized. Your blog is going to become your business. Treat it as such. Invest in it and yourself.
Get a self-hosted Blog. Buy your domain and hosting. You can buy those together or separately.
I use namecheap. Their domains are good so I bought the hosting as well because it’s cheaper.
3) No research or very little
Take your time before you jump in and start your blog. Spend time doing research, learn everything you can about blogging. Write down tips, you will need them. It will save you some time once your blog is launched.
4) Choosing the wrong software service
You want your blog to succeed right? Of course you do.
So, pick the best software service. WordPress.org. is the best.
That’s where you wanna be at. Over 38% of bloggers use and recommend wordpress.org. Not wordpress.com. Please don’t use a free blogging platform.
5) Not writing enough content before buying your domain and hosting.
Your content is the backbone of your blog. Its everything. It’s why your audience stick around. Make it unbelievably epic.
I heard many bloggers tell me this but did I listen? No
I had only 4 blog post done when I bought my domain and hosting. And it took me a long time to actually promote my blog. Because I had to write more blog posts.
6) Starting an email list too late.
Don’t do that. Start on day 1.
Right this second.
The sooner you can start building trust and a relationship with your audience, the better.
Start thinking about an opt-in freebie. Write it, then head on over to canva to create it.
Apply to mailerlite and start growing your list. It will save you so much time and help you grow from the start.
7) Avoid doing busy work instead of actually growing your blog.
Before starting your blog, draw up a business plan.
- Write down what you u want your blog to become.
- Who you want to help.
- Your monetization strategy
- Content strategy
- Your goals and dreams
And actionable steps on how you plan on achieving it. Step by step. Every quarter, month, week, and day. Work on those steps that will move you towards those goals.
That will grow your blog.
Don’t think customizing your blog is growing it. It’s not. Writing blog posts, affiliate posts, lead magnets, and guest posts. That’s growing your blog. Do a whole lot of that.
8) You don’t have your legal pages ready
In a perfect world, you can pay a lawyer to do your legal pages for you. But we don’t live in a perfect world do we?
Nope. But if you have money to pay for a lawyer’s services, go for it. That will save you time and a headache.
You can, of course, do it yourself. It just takes so much time. That’s why I suggest you do it before starting your blog. My legal pages were not ready. Do not make one of these 11 mistakes when starting your blog.
Like seriously. Don’t run around like a headless chicken, looking for free templates like I did.
That’s just.. no.
Don’t do that.

9) Not knowing your monetization strategies
Avoid this mistake when starting a blog. If you need to make money fast, then offer services. While you wait for the other more passive monetization methods to kick in.
You want to have more than one income steam. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. That basket might break.
Even before going into my blog. I already knew how I was going to make money. I thought about it.
And thought about it.
Think about how you want to make money with your blog. It will save you time and money in the future.
10) Not treating your blog as a business
Be business-minded. See your blog as a business. Where you want to take it. See the end from the beginning. Like where do you want your blog to be in a year? In 5 or 10 years?
It will motivate you to keep going when you encounter problems along your journey. It also allows you to show up every day to make your blog a success.
As soon as you buy your domain and hosting you become a business owner. Tell yourself that. It will hold you accountable.
And it will make you actually get up and write your posts, send those emails, and start that email list. Take it seriously.
11) Putting SEO off.
