When I started blogging I thought all I had to do was write some blog posts, publish and watch the traffic roll in. 

How very naive of me. 

I know. 

I soon learned that, that is not going to get me anywhere. 

So I did some digging. 

And found that there is a whole list of things you should do to every blog post before you hit publish. 

No more writing posts, hitting the publish button, and calling it a day. 

No. 

Now I try to incorporate all these steps before hitting publish. 

So without further ado, here are the 12 steps to follow before posting your blog post. 

1. Give a great user experience

When reading an article, the majority of people skim. They don’t always read the full post. Your job is to make sure they do. 

Use headings, subheadings, bolt text, images and videos. 

Headings are more important than you may think. They tell Google and other search engines what your post is about. In addition to that, they make it very skimmable for your reader. And they get to the part they want to read quickly and easily. 

(H1 tag)                                                  

H1 tag is the main heading for your post after the title tag. It is usually 20-70 characters long. Containing at least one long-tail keyword. You need only one H1 tag per blog post.                                          

Subheadings    (H2,H3)                                

H2 Is your main topic (secondary title)                 

H3 It is your sub topic (subtitle)                          

H4-H6 is your section topic sub-header   

Having these will give the user a better experience.                                        

2. A click worthy title 

Make it enticing for the reader. Intrigue them. 

Get them wondering about your post. Whet their appetite.

More people will want to read your article. People are inquisitive by nature. If you don’t have a catchy title, nobody will read your post. 

At the same time, you want to include your keywords in your title. It helps your posts get ranked.

3.  Optimise your post for SEO 

Search engine optimization (SEO) is when Google ranks your post. You want to strive to end up on page one. 

SEO is complex and more complicated than I can explain in this post. But learning SEO should be your top priority. Google gives you free organic traffic. If SEO is done right. 

When you get started you can download the Yoast SEO plugin. It guides you through the most basic SEO practices.

Your meta description describes what your post is about. It is what Google displays in the search results. 

It should explain why readers should read it. Make sure to edit your slug, which is your URL, to make sure it includes your keyword. You can include a couple of long-tail keywords.

5. Include Links to your relevant content.

Internal links:

Your main goal with a piece of content is to keep your reader on for longer. 

Keep them engaged by going from one post to the next.

Link posts that are related to one another. 

This keeps people on your blog and helps reduce your bounce rate. 

External links:

Extend on your post. 

Add links that are helpful to your audience. That relates to the topic at hand. 

If there is a high-quality post on another blogger, link to it.

Linking to other authority websites will help your rankings in Google SEO while adding more value to your reader.

6. Include affiliate links and disclaimers

If you have affiliate links, you have to disclose them at the beginning of your post. 

It is required by law to disclose when you have affiliate links in your article. Affiliate links are usually that small little writing at the beginning of your blog post.

7. Add a Call to Action 

Tell your audience what to do next. 

Do you want them to share your article? Ask them.

Want them to leave a comment? Ask away. 

Have a great product that could help them in their blogging journey? 

Tell them about it.

Bottom line? State clearly what action you want them to take. They can’t read your mind.

And also, it encourages people to act. 

Interaction between you and your audience will help you get to know each other on a personal level. When your audience knows, likes, and trusts you, they are more likely to purchase from you. 

8. Add Images 

I admit that I am not very good at this. I only have my feature image at the beginning of my post. 

Try to add a few pictures throughout your post. It breaks it up and makes it more interesting to read. Having more images can also get you more shares. 

9. Create and add freebies 

To get readers back to your site you need an email list. Create and include a subscriber form in your blog post. 

I use MailChimp because they are free for up to 1000 subscribers and include pop-up forms and lots more. 

Remember to also create email automation. A welcome email and a few follow-up emails along with other valuable content throughout the month.

An email list is the easiest way to connect with your audience. You have a direct conversation and nobody can take your list away from you.

Unlike social media, your list belongs to you. Remember the money is in the list. 

Your number one goal should be to grow your email list.

10. Add Pinterest ready images

Including shareable images in every blog post is important. You want people to share your articles. 

I create at least four different pins for my posts with different headlines that I brainstorm while I write my posts. 

Use canva to create click-worthy images for free. 

11. Add social sharing buttons 

You want people to share your article right? 

So make it easy for them. 

Use social sharing buttons for all the platforms that you are on. It will increase your traffic and grow your blog faster.

12. Edit and proofread

Proofread your blog post before hitting publish. You can use Grammarly. As a beginner, the free plan should be enough for now.

Put your article down for an hour or even a day, then come back to it with fresh eyes. You’ll definitely find more errors and be able to correct them. 

Some will slip through the cracks but that’s ok. Perfection doesn’t exist. Just do your best and that will be good enough.
