6 Steps to take after starting a blog

So you bought your domain name and hosting. But what now? Maybe you know what you have to do. And you are just not sure in which order you should be doing it.

What is the most important step you should take after starting a blog? Is everything really that urgent? Can some things wait? What is just a waste of your precious time? With a to-do list longer than a book. You don’t have the luxury to spend your time with less important things.

Like getting your logo just right. Or getting your colors to match perfectly. Not that it’s not important. It is. But it won’t grow your blog.

We want to do things that will get us to monetization as fast as possible. To grow our audience in the quickest amount of time.

So what are the steps that will get you from an empty blog to a beautiful profitable blog, that helps your audience with their most pressing problems?

Let’s get into it shall we?

1. Content

Long, in-depth, helpful epic content.

Create good, quality content that audiences are searching for. Content that can help them with their problem. And that provides a solution to their most pressing problem. Write a few pillar posts. Very informative posts that solve your readers’ problems. Pillar posts are usually around 4000 words long. Any number above 1000 is fine, as long as it’s helpful to your audience.

2. Learn SEO

You may think about skipping SEO at first. But you don’t want to do that. Trust.

Start learning and using SEO as soon as you can. Preferably before starting a blog. If that is not possible, then while creating your content. Be sure to use it in your posts.

You don’t want to go back after creating 30 posts and having to add SEO to each one of them later on. That is time you can spend on something else that moves you forward.

It does not have to be in-depth SEO. The basic use of SEO should suffice. SEO is a long-term game. But getting it right from the beginning will save you time and money in the long term.

3. Start an email list

Start an email list when no one is visiting my site yet? Yes. It is definitely one of the 6 steps to take after starting a blog.

Let me tell you why.

Because as soon as you get visitors to your site, you start growing your list.

I have heard many bloggers express regret about missing out on the earlier subscribers. You don’t have to be one of them. We know better. So do better. Be-better.

Create your freebies and apply them to an Email Marketing service. Mailchimp offers a free service of up to 1000/2000 subscribers. Or you can go with Convertkit if you can afford them. They are so much better.

4. Promote your blog

Now that your content is created, your posts are published. You have a freebie to offer your audience to join your email. The next step is the promotion process.

Promote the hell out of your blog posts. Everywhere your audience hangs out. My main focus was Pinterest.

Depending on your niche, yours should be too. Pinterest brings in 50 – 90% of most bloggers’ traffic.

5. Monetize your blog

There are a dozen and more ways to monetize a Blog. Choose what is right for you and your blog. If you want to add ads to your blog, use ads.

Affiliate marketing is how most bloggers start monetizing their sites. It is much easier than creating your own product.

That however should be one of your goals down the road in your blogging journey.

More on that next.

Services is also one of my favourite ways to monetize a Blog. See making money with a blog takes time.

If you don’t want to wait so long, ( let’s face it who does?) then it is the perfect method to start earning immediately. You can do freelance writing. That means writing for other bloggers or publications to make money immediately.

Or you can offer Pinterest Marketing Services and become a virtual assistant. Whatever feels right and easy for you.

6. Creating your own product

The 6th step to take after starting a blog is to create your own product. It sounds daunting, doesn’t it? It doesn’t have to be. Creating your own product can be a simple ebook or even a useful printable that your audience will benefit from. It’s a perfect way to get your feet wet. And to get you used to create paid products. By the time you create a full-fledged course, you will be good at creating useful products.

You don’t have to wait until you’ve been blogging for a year or more to create a product. If you have something of value to give to your audience, they won’t mind buying a product that will improve their lives.

Creating your own product does take a lot of time. But you can sell it as a download over and over again, after creating it just once. And you keep all the earnings you make. Unlike affiliate marketing where you only get a certain percentage.

So start thinking about your first product. Ask your audience’s input. Then create something cheap that everyone can afford. An affordable product that costs anywhere between 10 to $30. That is super helpful and helps you build trust with your audience.

Eventually, you can move on to create many courses and ultimately your main course at about $100. The course e that your blog would be known for.

Conclusion to 6 Steps to take after starting a Blog

Create long in-depth, helpful, quality content. Great content is king. Quality content will get you noticed and grow your blog faster.

Learn SEO. There is a steep learning curve, but also worth it in the long run. Google will send you free, organic traffic. With only the work you put in in the beginning with SEO.

Start an email list. The money is in the list. They start to know, like, and trust you. And will end up buying from you.

Promote your blog. Without promoting your blog, it’s just an online diary. Learn marketing and promote as if your life depends on it. Learn Pinterest, it sends the most traffic at the beginning of your blogging journey.

Monetize your blog. The end goal for your blog is to make money right? Find different monetization strategies to implement and diversify.

Create your own products. Start small with an eBook or a workbook etc. Then move onto many courses then eventually main courses.

Your own product is the best way to create consistent income that is not dependent on anyone else.

Good luck, work hard and never ever give up.
